Join Liz for a weekend workshop dedicated to exploring Katonah Yoga®, a practice developed by Nevine Michaan over 40 years that blends traditional Hatha yoga postures with Taoist theory, personal geometry & practical metaphors. This workshop is designed for yoga practitioners of all levels seeking to weave their conscious awareness through their physical body to create a more well-woven, well-rounded sense of self, both on and off the mat. Katonah Yoga® is also a special gift to teachers looking to bring more clarity, care and fluency to their teaching. Through a combination of theory, pranayama, body reading, restorative postures, and hands-on practice, this will be a weekend of exploration, refining alignment, and community.

Our intimate morning sessions will begin in our cozy, back room where we will create a container for our weekend’s journey. In the afternoon, we will transition to the main room, allowing us to expand our practice.

Weekend Schedule

Day 1: Foundations and Exploration

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Welcome and Introduction

A time to connect, outline our plan, and set our sights.

10:30 AM - 11 AM: Pranayama Practice

Engage with breathwork designed to weave your imagination through your body and introduce key concepts for the weekend.

11 AM - 11:30 AM: The Key Fits

We will move within our cozy confines, explore some fits that help unlock more satisfying experiences in our yoga postures and create the conditions for our nervous systems to relax. It is practical, satisfying and soothing to know and feel our bodies are made to fit.

11:30 – 12:30: Body Reading

We will look at one willing person in formal detail and weave the material through them. We will support them in noticing where they go, and likely take them somewhere they are less familiar. We will see ourselves in them and offer some practical practices to support overall well-being.

12:30 PM - 1:00 PM: Lunch

Afternoon Immersion

1:00 -1:30 Pole Work & Breath Expansion: Open the lungs and expand your breath capacity. We will open our windows and let the light in, clear winter from the lungs and prepare for Spring.

1:30 – 2pm Moon & Water Salutes: We will flow through salutes designed to soothe and inform the nervous system while building light heat and fluidity in the body.

2 – 2:45pm Alignment Practice: Focus on fitting the body into very basic postures for optimal alignment. You will likely already be very familiar with many of these movements. We will slow down to experience finding our fits.

Break 2:45 – 3pm

3 – 4:30pm Restorative Postures & Adjustments: Learn and practice giving and receiving adjustments, emphasizing finding space in the lower body to build a more spacious & stable, functional foundation.

Day 2: Practice and Integration

10:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Good Morning!

Reconvene with reflections, intentions and questions for the day ahead.

10:30AM - 11 AM: Pranayama & Meditation

Guided Pranayama with emphasis on weaving the breath through the body informed by Lao Tzu’s magic square.

11 AM - 12 PM: Magic Square Workshop

Learn to use the magic square as a tool for personal insight and problem-solving.

 12 PM - 1 PM: Body Reading

We will look at a second person in formal detail and again weave the material through our willing volunteer. With repetition, we will be able to notice more, and offer more insight. We will again offer some practical recipes to support their well-being.

1 – 1:30PM Lunch

Afternoon

1:30 - 2:45PM Flow through a Katonah informed Vinyasa practice, repeat some practices from Saturday, and integrate our fits into our flow. We will weave the magic square through our forms.

2:45 – 3pm Break

 3:00 – 4:15 A Purposeful Pause

Special time left in the schedule to address whatever needs arise including, questions, concerns or areas of interest. If nothing is pressing, we will work with more reformative practices and partnered adjustments using props.

4:15 – 4:30 King of the Mountain: Conclude with an empowering practice that integrates the weekend's learning and celebrates its completion.

What to Expect:

Connection: With small group sessions, we will have time and space to play together.

Learning: Gain insights into the theoretical aspects of Katonah Yoga, including its approach to alignment, geometry, and the use of props.

New Techniques: Enhance your practice with hands-on skills in adjustments, specific alignment, and the use of props for both personal and teaching purposes.

This workshop is ideal for curious yoga practitioners and yoga teachers who are interested in exploring Katonah Yoga's richness. This practice is a tremendously powerful tool, so whether you're looking to engage more fully with your personal practice or enhance your teaching skills, this weekend’s intention is to give you more! More insight, more connection, more information, more joy. If you are pursuing your 300-hour Registered Yoga Alliance Certificate through Expand Yoga, this workshop will count as 15 hours toward your certification.
